The energy functional consists of coulomb, kinetic and exchange-correlation (XC) terms. The starting point for the XC functional is usually the result for the homogeneous electron gas, after which so called nonlocal or generalized gradient corrections (GGA: Generalized Gradient Approximation) are added.
