For broken-symmetry calculations, one often converges the easy high-spin state first and then attempts to converge the more cumbersome states. The spin-flip method, possibly together with the MODIFYSTARTPOTENTIAL option now supported in the GUI, makes it much easier to converge all the relevant spin configurations.
