Macintosh OS X InstructionsIntroductionADF installations on a Macintosh OS X machine require the following steps:
These tools are not specific for ADF. Many users probably have already installed XFree86 with there favorite window manager, or the Apple developer tools, or the Absoft fortran compiler. Then of course you can skip these installations, and follow the standard installation instructions. Install XFree86 with window managerXFree86The ADF GUI modules need an X-window environment. You can get XFree86 from www.xdarwin.org or from www.apple.com/downloads/macosx (click "unix apps"). Installation is made easy by a graphical installer. You will need to install the complete XFree86 system, and not just a subset. You should also probably avoid using the tool "fink" for this, since it tends to install things in unusual places, where the ADF build system will not find them. Window Manager (OroborOSX)Now that you have the X-window environment, you might want a nice window manager that works well in Mac OS X. OroborOSX is a good choice (www.apple.com/downloads/macosx), but you may use any window manager you like. Extra installations required to compile the source distribution of ADF:Apple's Developer ToolsYou will also need Apple's Mac OS X developer tools. These include, for example, the C compiler used to compile ADF. The developer tools are sometimes included with the Mac OS X installation CD. If so, just install them. Otherwise you will have to download them from Apple (developer.apple.com). Be warned: it is a large download. Also, in order to get them, you have to join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) as an online member. Although this is a minor hassle, it is free, and just involves filling in some forms on the web site.Absoft Pro Fortran compilersThis bit costs money. You need to purchase the Absoft Fortran compilers (www.absoft.com) and install them. At this moment the source distribution of ADF for Macintosh OS X can only by compiled with these compilers. | |
