Dear All,

Concerning the latest postings about PGI compilers and Linux, I have a
working copy of the Makeflags, which is available upon request.
About Fabio's contribution I must add that libresolv.* is only available
in RedHat distributions (at least for Slackware and Suse 5.3 is absent)
and the workaround doens't work for other distributions.

I can summarise our experience with Linux and PGI briefly. Since some
years, we've been using the several incarnations of the Slackware
distribution. The pgi stuff works flawlessly at least since version 3.4.

A couple of weeks ago, I installed SUSE 5.3 in one new machine, but pgf77
refuses to work, giving segmentation faults even with the simplest codes.
System administration is very easy with SUSE and for the near future of
the lab is the right way to go. I'll contact PGI support to see if they
know anything about the problem.

RedHat is the missing alternative and hopefully I'll have some time to
try it soon. In my opinion Slackware is very stable and the right choice.
If RedHat is as stable as Slackware it is for sure a valuable alternative
because upgrades are said to be much easier.

I hope this posting helps,

Pedro.
