Post Doctoral Research Position Available

Computer Modelling of Bulk Materials

A position for a PDRA will be available from November 2002 to carry out
research on the Computer Modelling of Bulk Materials. The work is funded
by A.W.E.Aldermaston.

You will work primarily within the Computer Modelling Group in the School
of Chemistry which is well equipped with SG workstations and a Linux Cluster
together with suitable software.
You will collaborate closely with AWE personnel and will have access to
the computing facilities at AWE which include an IBM mainframe with 2000
processors and a Linux Cluster with 150 processors.

The research program will be concentrated in areas of interest to AWE
specifically a study of the interactions of gases on the surfaces and within
the bulk of a range of materials. The effects of adding layers of
further volatiles such as carbon monoxide and water on the surface will be
considered. Studies on the growth of oxide surfaces on metals will be carried
out together with calculations of oxide phase stability and transformations
between oxide phases. Methods including molecular dynamics and density
functional theory using the ADF program will be used. Development of
techniques for DFT calculations on the actinides are particularly
important. It will be possible to publish the research in the open
literature.

You will have prior experience in computer modelling. The post is tenable from
November 2002. The PDRA will be appointed at an appropriate point on the
Academic and Related Staff Scale. The position is available for 2 years in
the first instance.
