Computational/theoretical chemistry PostDoc or Ph.D. student positions
available
Two Ph.D. student positions or one PostDoc position are available in
the field of computational/theoretical chemistry at the University of
Erlangen in Germany. The research projects deal with the calculation of
magnetic effects of molecules. Our current efforts are concentrated
around NMR and the optical activity of compounds containing transition
metals and/or heavy atoms, in the framework of density functional
theory (DFT). The research will be carried out at the institute for
physical and theoretical chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Jochen
Autschbach. For further details please see the following web site:
http://www.chemie.uni-erlangen.de/thc/jochen/
There are a number of possible projects available that involve either
the application of existing programs to specific problems, or the
development of new methodology and computer code, or both. They can be
chosen depending on the background and research interests of the
candidate(s).
For the Ph.D. student positions a M.Sc. degree or equivalent,
preferably in chemistry or physics, is required. The positions are
available for up to 3.5 years with a salary of currently approx. Euro
1000/month (after deduction of income tax and other contributions,
health care & dental care), depending on age and marital status.
Knowledge of German is not required since a Ph.D. thesis can be submitted
in English. There are no formal course requirements, few teaching
requirements, and no tuition (there is a student registration fee of
currently 28 Euro/semester).
For the PostDoc position, previous experience with quantum chemical
calculations is required. Experience with program development and a
strong background in molecular quantum mechanics are not essential but
very welcome. The position is available for one year with a possible
extension for up to 3.5 years. The gross salary is approx. 42000
Euro/year. Knowledge of German is not required.
There are excellent computational facilities available at the
institute and the University's computing center, such as a
28-processor SGI Origin 3400 or the research group's IA32-based Linux
cluster. Erlangen is located in southern Germany at the northern
border of Bavaria. It is a beautiful old town with very good public
transport and many student pubs. The University
(http://www.uni-erlangen.de), founded in 1743, has currently about
21000 students, 3/4 of which are located at the campus in Erlangen and
another 1/4 in the neighbouring city Nuernberg (Nuremberg). Erlangen
is within about 2 hrs driving distance of the cities Muenchen (Munich)
and Stuttgart as well as the Bavarian Alps.
