Dear list,

since some of you asked for a summary, here it is, in brief. Thanks to everybody
who replied, it was useful. Here are a few points:

- The general consensus seems to be that Intel is prefereable over Athlon at the
current time due to (i) stability and (ii) availability of compilers.
- One reply suggests the Apple G5, see also at:

- The best solution, of course, would be to go to the vendor and run a few
benchmarks but this effort is precisely what I wanted to avoid by asking this
question to the list :-)
- SCM kindly provided some benchmarks for the Xeon system. However, I don't
include them here because I don't "own" them.
