Graduate student positions in Winnipeg, MB, Canada
==================================================

   I am looking for two to three graduate students at the M.Sc. or Ph.D. levels
to join my research group.

   The research of my group is concerned with developing and using of
state-of-the-art quantum-chemical methods to study molecules and their
properties. Possible projects, most of which involve collaborations with other
institutions, could include:
- Theoretical study of lithium amide compounds: effects of solvation,
aggregation and complexation;
- Theoretical actinide molecular sciences (with a particular focus on
environmentally relevant complexes of uranium, neptunium, plutonium, and americium);
- Program (code) development aiming at calculating NMR and ESR parameters.
   For more details on my research program, please see my web pages at
http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~schrecke/.

   A strong background in areas such as quantum chemistry/ quantum mechanics,
inorganic chemistry, molecular physics, solid-state physics, mathematics, or
programming is desirable, although not required.

   Interested students should contact me directly and provide a detailed CV as
well as a list of publications and research projects (if applicable). University
of Manitoba regulations require proof of English language proficiency (e.g.
TOEFL) as well as a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 in the last two
full years of study. Thus, applicants should provide a copy of their university
transcripts or otherwise comment on these requirements.

   Possible start dates for these positions are Sept. 1, 2004, and Jan. 1, 2005.
Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada who don’t need to meet visa
requirements could also still consider a May 1, 2004, start date.

   My research group is located in the department of Chemistry at the University
of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The University of Manitoba (http://www.umanitoba.ca) is
the largest University in the province of Manitoba and among Canada’s major
research universities. It has a student population of about 23,000. The
Chemistry Department (http://www.umanitoba.ca/chemistry) is one of the largest
departments in the University of Manitoba, yet it keeps a friendly and
collaborative atmosphere.

   Winnipeg (http://www.city.winnipeg.mb.ca) is a prairie city with a population
of approximately 670,000. Its people come from various ethnic backgrounds, and
are generally friendly and welcoming. Excellent cultural amenities include
ballet, theatre, symphony, ethnic festivals, and museums, and professional
sports teams are popular. Housing is perhaps the most affordable in Canada.
Winnipeg is a safe city. It is located close to good outdoor recreational
activities with a wide variety of lakes, beaches and wilderness areas within an
easy drive of the city.
