The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to scientific and technological innovation and providing technical leadership in the development of density functional theory (DFT) methodologies in NWChem. Developed to improve the EMSL's science capabilities, NWChem is a computational chemistry software suite designed to run on the massively parallel computers at PNNL. The candidate's initial focus will involve solving problems in the areas of interfacial chemistry and linear scaling for large biomolecules, as well as pioneering innovations in time-dependent DFT. The candidate will provide scientific leadership in computational research projects in the field of interfacial, biogeochemical, and biological systems. S/he will interact heavily with users to provide support for the density functional portions of NWChem. The successful candidate must work well in a diverse and highly collaborative environment of computational chemists and experimentalists. Minimum Requirements Level IV: Ph.D. with 3+ years experience in developing DFT methodologies is required. Must be a technical expert in DFT who selects and widely applies principles, theories and concepts. The Level IV scientist leads technical decision making at a project level. Level V: Ph.D. with 5+ years experience in developing DFT methodologies is required (more years experience preferred). Must have a national or international authority in DFT and be applying intensive and diversified knowledge of scientific principles in broad areas of assignments and related fields. The Level V scientist leads technical decision making at a major project level. Qualifications Strong software development skills using FORTRAN (additional C skills a plus), the ability to develop innovative and novel DFT methods, and experience in advanced software development on parallel high performance computer platforms are required. Candidates should be well versed in the use and maintenance of large software packages and will display excellent written, verbal, and problem solving skills. A demonstrated ability to perform independent research is essential; a considerable publication record is required. Past technical contributions must be generally recognized as having a substantial impact on advancing the current state of scientific knowledge and understanding. Equal Employment Opportunity Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace.
