8th International Conference on the Applications of Density Functional Theory to Chemistry and Physics September 6th-10th 1999, Roma (Italy) FIRST CIRCULAR Presentation of the Conference -------------------------------- Density Functional Theory (DFT) has undoubtedly reached the level of an indispensable tool in Computational Quantum Chemistry and Physics. The main purpose of this conference is to offer a forum where to invite both chemists and physicists to present and discuss DFT state-of-the-art, its methodological developments and applications to increasingly complex systems. In particular we expect participants to share their knowledge and body of experience in DFT so as to be better equipped to face up to the challenges arising from what high-level modeling and simulation demand. Following the first one-day symposium on Application of SCF-Xalpha Calculations to Inorganic Systems, held in San Miniato (Italy, October 31, 1984), and the International Workshop on Theoretical Approaches to the Description of the Electronic Structures of Transition Metal Compounds (San Miniato, 1985), some of the participants suggested it was important to set up a series of regular meetings to be held every two years. Consequently several meetings were held in the 1986-1997 period in: Venezia (Italy, 1986), Arles (France, 1988), Ascona (Switzerland, 1991), Como (Italy,1993), Paris (France, 1995) and Wien (Austria, 1997) The DFT99 Conference: a scientific overview ------------------------------------------- Here follows a list of the current topics in Density Functional Theory, which will be introduced by Plenary Lectures: A: Methodological Developments B: Application of DFT to Isolated Systems C: Application of DFT to Systems in Condensed Phases D: Application of DFT to Complex Molecular Systems E: Calculation of Electric and Magnetic Properties Key-lectures presented by the Conference's Invited Speakers will focus on advances in selected areas of chemistry and physics. English will be the Conference's official language. The following Scientists have agreed to give lectures ----------------------------------------------------- Roger Amos (UK), Julio A. Alonso (E), Peter Blaha (A), Roberto Car (CH), H. Chermette (F), Maurizio Cossi (I), Claude A. Daul (CH), Leif A. Eriksson (SWE), Paul Geerlings (B), Eberhard K.U. Gross (D), Vladimir G. Malkin (SK), Robert G. Parr (USA) , Gustavo E. Scuseria(USA), Tomasz A. Wesolowski (CH), Tom Ziegler (CA) * The 1998 Nobel Laureates Walter Kohn and John A. Pople will give Special Lectures All participants are invited to submit contributions, specifying whether they are meant to be presented as a short oral presentation (15 min) or as a poster. Applications will be selected by the members of Scientific Committee and included in the Abstract Book. Guidelines on the abstract format required are listed below. After Feb. 15, applicants will be able to file in their abstract directly on line at the URL specified below. Prompt notice will be sent to applications selected as oral contributions. Preference will be given to communications presented by young researchers. Abstract Format --------------- While preparing your abstract, please comply with the following parameters: A4 format (one page) Typestyle: Arial 12 line 1: Topic (Capital letter from A to E according to the previous list) line 2: Title (Bold face) line 3: Author(s) name(s) line 4: Institution(s) In the case the abstract and/or poster has an author and several co-authors, please, remember to write the author's name first and underline it. The deadline for submitting the abstract will be 15th July 1999 Proceedings ----------- The papers delivered during the Conference will be reviewed by referees and published as Volume 1, Part III of: Recent Advances in Density Functional Methods edited by V. Barone, A. Bencini, and P. Fantucci World Scientific Publishing Company The DFT99 Conference Site ------------------------- Rome, Italy's capital is proud to host the 1999 Conference from September 6th through September 10th. The Conference will be held at the Main Conference Hall (Aula Magna) of the CNR - Italy's National Research Council-, P.le Aldo Moro, 7. The site is central and can be easily reached either by taxi, bus or subway.
