The ADF program had its genesis in the research of Dr. Evert Jan Baerends in the theoretical chemistry group of the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. Soon after the inception of the ADF program Dr. Tom Ziegler joined the development and continued this work upon becoming a professor at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. SCM today operates with Stan van Gisbergen as business leader and with scientific and strategic guidance by Evert Jan Baerends and Tom Ziegler, who are all profiled below.
| Prof. Dr. Evert Jan Baerends Professor of Theoretical Chemistry, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam SCM Partner Born 1945: |
Prof. Baerends' Ph.D. work in the early seventies laid the foundation for the ADF software package. The further development of ADF and BAND has always been a primary research focus for the Theoretical Chemistry group in Amsterdam, which he is heading. Prof. Baerends' current broad DFT-related research interests are described on the VU theoretical chemistry group's website. Soon to retire from the VU, Prof. Baerends will continue his academic career in the chemistry department of Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea. Prof. Baerends is a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science. He ranks amongst the ISI's "Highly Cited" chemists.
| Prof. Dr. Tom Ziegler Professor of Theoretical Inorganic Chemistry, University of Calgary SCM Partner Born 1945: |
Prof. Ziegler joined the ADF developments very early, in the 1970's. Since then he has headed the Theoretical Inorganic Chemistry group at the University of Calgary, Canada. Many developments in ADF have come from his group, including the study of Potential Energy Surfaces and method development in spectroscopy. Prof. Ziegler's current broad DFT-related research interests are described on his research group's website. Prof. Ziegler holds the prestigious Canada Research Chair, and is also amongst the ISI's "Highly Cited" chemists. He was won, among many other awards, the Schrödinger Medal of WATOC and the Steacie Award of the Canadian Society of Chemistry.

Dr. Stan van Gisbergen is in charge of all business-related matters for SCM. Dr. van Gisbergen studied theoretical physics and then did his Ph.D. under supervision of Prof. Baerends and the late Prof. Jaap Snijders, on method development on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory in ADF. In 1998, this work was awarded the DSM award for best Ph.D. thesis in The Netherlands in the field of Chemistry and Chemical Technology. Before joining SCM, Stan worked for two more years as a postdoc with Prof. Baerends on ADF speed-ups (parallelization and linear scaling techniques). One of his primary tasks is to initiate, stimulate, and facilitate academic and business collaborations related to SCM's software. |
