Teaching

The ADF modeling suite is an excellent program for teaching physical and computational chemistry.
The fully integrated graphical interface makes it easy to build molecules, to set up and follow calculations, and to visualize results (IR spectra and normal modes, UV/VIS spectra and transitions, orbital interaction diagrams, MOs, densities, DOS, and many more properties).

With more academics teaching with ADF, more teaching material is becoming available as a starting point for your own computational chemistry course. Try out ADF to see for yourself how easy it is to deploy with an automatic license, which makes it easy for students to use our software on their own machine during your course.

Discounted teaching-only licenses

To promote teaching with ADF, SCM offers classroom licenses at considerably lower fees than the standard research licenses. Examples for yearly teaching-only licenses for a single research group:

License conditions and types

The classroom licenses are limited to teaching purposes only, not for research. No papers may be published with ADF results obtained with this license. The licenses for 10, 20, or unlimited machines can be installed on student desktop / laptop machines at the University site.
We differentiate between teaching done by a single group or by multiple research groups. If your colleagues in different departments would also like to use ADF for teaching, or you want to combine with a research license, or you want to discuss other licensing options, contact us for a quote! Our standard multi-year discounts also apply.

An unlimited research license can also be used for teaching at no additional cost. SCM can create a separate teaching account so that students can smoothly download and run ADF with automatically approved temporary licenses.

Teaching material

We have collected material on our teaching materials page, including well-received Bachelors and Master courses in computational chemistry and more advanced exercises. You can also re-use material from our workshop materials and tutorials.

We very much welcome input and materials from teachers that have used the ADF modeling suite for their own courses!

Workshops

Hands-on workshops for the ADF Modeling Suite are regularly organized in various places across the globe. These workshops are usually tutored by our own ADF experts and/or our academic partners. Materials from previous workshops are available. If you are interested in having a workshop at your site, let us know! We can also keep you posted on upcoming workshops.
